Celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day at the Galowich Family YMCA

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is Wednesday, May 25 and to celebrate the Galowich Family YMCA invites active older adults to explore various options of physical activity available at the Y. Stop by any of our fun activities and classes including:

Swimnastics with Amy
8-8:45 a.m.
This fun, high energy class promotes flexibility, improved circulation, muscle toning and cardiovascular conditioning.

Interval Strength Training with Janet
9:15-10 a.m. 
This consists of building strength, muscle and endurance.

Zumba with Janet
10:15-11 a.m.
This class fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-following moves!

ATI Physical Therapy 
12:30-1 p.m.
ATI will present age related exercises to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Discussion will feature specific exercises for fall prevention as well as hand exercises to combat joint pain.

Cardio Interval with Alissa
5-5:45 p.m.
This class incorporates intervals of cardio endurance and muscle conditioning. Great for all fitness levels!

Yoga with Allene
6-6:45 p.m.
This is a workout for your body and mind including poses followed by stretching and relaxation.

Morris Community YMCA Teaming Up With Morris Hospital To Offer New Pedaling For Parkinson’s Program

Pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace may change the life of someone living with Parkinson’s disease. Research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic found that patients can experience a 35 percent reduction in symptoms by riding an indoor, stationary bicycle for one hour three days a week. While cycling is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, there is compelling evidence to show that it does make a real difference for many who try it. Classes are designed to empower participants by optimizing their physical function, improving their gait, balance, speech, handwriting, and overall endurance, and helping to delay the progression of symptoms.

Join the Morris Community YMCA and Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers for this free Pilot Program!

*There will be no class on Monday, September 6 due to the Labor Day holiday.

The rumors are true—we have new cycle bikes! These bikes feature cutting-edge technology that allows you to measure your performance and track your workouts like never before. All those interested in participating in our new cycle programming can do so by completing the following steps.

Step 1: Download the “ICG Training” App for your mobile device.

Step 2: Register and attend one of the following free test sessions to set up your app*:

Commit to Your Health: Jump-Starting Your Fitness Routine

It’s almost time to turn your clocks back an hour, which means many individuals will look forward to an extra hour of sleep. However, at the Y, we encourage our members to take advantage of that extra hour by jump-starting their fitness routine when Daylight Savings Time officially ends this weekend.

Fall Session 3 will tip off on Monday, November 5. Here are some great tips to help you embrace a healthy lifestyle this fall:

Be Consistent-  Although it may seem like a great idea to stay in bed longer, it’s important to keep your schedule consistent, including exercise times.  Manage your fitness schedule accordingly. In the fall, keep your workout times as normal as possible. Working out too close to your bedtime can make it harder for you to fall asleep.

Join a Class- It’s the perfect time to start a new class at the Y. Take advantage of the many different fitness opportunities available at the Y. Group exercise classes will help you keep a consistent schedule and you’ll be able to transition your workouts to indoors.

Swim Laps- Pools are popular in the summertime, but swimming can also be a great indoor exercise year-round. Dive in and swim some laps as part of your exercise routine. The Greater Joliet Area YMCA offers indoor lap pools at three of its branches. Plus, you can enjoy an afternoon or evening of fun with your family at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA indoor waterpark.
