Greater Joliet Area YMCA Hiring Summer Staff Positions

Summer Camp Staff Hiring The weather may be cold and snowy, but the Y always has an eye on summer! Whether it’s day camp, sports camp, or swim lessons, we know the Y will be busy and exciting during our summer sessions! And, as we prepare for another great year of providing important childcare services and youth development programs for our community, we are currently looking to hire new part-time employees to expand our staff team.

We are currently hiring summer day camp counselors, lifeguards, and sports instructors to work at our branches and program sites this summer in Plainfield, Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Morris. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. Hours vary by location.

*Open to applicants, ages 16 and up. Certain eligibility requirements may be required.

Part-Time Employees receive the following benefits:

Celebrating a Successful Summer Camp Season at the YMCA

Our 2021 Summer Day Camp season officially came to a close earlier this week. And, oh, what an amazing summer it was! 

We’d like to thank all of our camp families for spending the summer with us here at the YMCA. We hope you have a wonderful school year and look forward to seeing you back at camp next summer.

We’d also like to thank all of our wonderful community partners who opened their doors and their hearts, allowing us to provide much-needed summer child care at locations throughout Will and Grundy Counties.

Finally, we’d like to thank our top-notch summer camp directors and counselors for their endless energy, compassion, and creativity. Your hard work and tireless dedication helped to ensure that each of our campers has a summer full of fun and memories.

As we take a look back at the summer that was, let’s take a closer look at YMCA Summer Camp By the Numbers:

14 Camp Locations

With a little help from our friends, we hosted camps at our YMCA facilities and at offsite locations throughout the community. Thank you, Salvation Army Joliet Corps Community Center, Messiah Lutheran Church, Saratoga School District 60C, Plainfield School District 202, and Valley View School District 365 for helping us serve families this summer.

2,034 Campers

We are so proud to provide a memorable camp experience for each and every one of our incredible summer day campers. 

256 Camp Counselors

Summer day camp would not be possible without the dedication, versatility, and leadership of our Summer Camp team. 

624 Children served by the YMCA’s Safety Around Water Summer Program

Each and every member of our Aquatics Team played a key role in teaching lifesaving water safety skills to hundreds of campers over the last several months. In all, we provided free swim lessons for more than 600 children in our community this summer as part of our YMCA’s Safety Around Water program. 

73,263 Meals and 26,051 Snacks Served 

We remain dedicated to assisting children who are faced with food insecurity and providing resources that support a healthy lifestyle for growing minds and bodies. This summer, we partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Plainfield District 202, Aramark Food Services, and Valley View School District 365U Nutrition Services to provide daily meals and snacks at many of our camp locations.

Over $28,000 raised by the YMCA’s Send a Kid to Camp Campaign 

At the Y, nobody is ever turned away due to the inability to pay. Nearly half the children who attend YMCA summer day camp programs receive financial assistance, and this is made possible by the incredible generosity of YMCA donors. This spring, our Send A Kid to Camp Campaign supporters generously funded nearly 700 days of camp for children in our community.

We look forward to seeing you next summer. Camp registration for the summer of 2022 will get underway in March!

C.W. Avery Family YMCA Partners with Plainfield School District 202 for Summer Day Camp Program

The C.W. Avery Family YMCA is excited to be teaming up with Plainfield School District 202 this summer to provide free half-day Camp CARES in grades K-8. Designed to support students’ social emotional learning, campers will enjoy up to eight weeks of summer fun full of youth enrichment activities, outdoor exploration, team building, recreation, arts and crafts, and more.

CAMP DATES

Session 1: June 14-July 9 *

Session 2: July 12-August 6

*Camp will not be held on Monday, July 5 due to the Independence Day holiday.

CAMP HOURS

Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-Noon

Campers may be dropped off beginning at 7:45 a.m.

Campers will be dismissed at noon.

YMCA Hiring Summer Camp Counselors

YMCA summer camps offer an action-packed, adventure-filled experience, where young people can make new friends while having a whole lot of fun! At Y camp, kids laugh, learn, explore and grow, while creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

Our caring and professional summer camp counselors play an important role in helping kids build confidence and character during their summer camp experience at the YMCA. Our dedicated and energetic camp counselors are second to none, and we are currently looking to hire new part-time employees to expand our summer camp team.

The Y is now hiring summer camp counselors, ages 16* and up, to work at our camp locations in Joliet, Romeoville, and Bolingbrook. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. Program hours vary by location.

Community Foundation of Will County Donates $15,000 to YMCA Mission Strong Fund

As a long time provider of before and after school care in Will County, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA has the distinct pleasure of working each day with youth in our communities. As our community continues to navigate through this public health crisis, the Y is teaming up with local school districts to support area families and students during remote learning this fall through its Kid Zone PLUS program. 

These efforts would not be possible without the support of local organizations like the Community Foundation of Will County, which recently awarded the Y a $15,000 grant in support of the YMCA Mission Strong Fund. 

The Mission Strong Fund was established to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the YMCA in the wake of our COVID-19 related closure and aid continued community service efforts after our reopening. The Community Foundation’s grant will support multiple Greater Joliet Area YMCA youth development initiatives including:

  • Providing much-needed financial assistance for Kid Zone PLUS families who are experiencing hardships due to COVID-19.
  • Adapting our youth programs to incorporate lower staff-to-child ratios to meet social distancing guidelines.
  • Implementing new safety guidelines in our child care and youth enrichment programs.

NASCAR Foundation Provides $9,250 Grant to C.W. Avery Family YMCA Summer Camp Program

YMCA Summer Day Camp provides kids with opportunities to have fun while building a healthy spirit, mind and body. Kids have the opportunity to find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. These experiences would not be possible without the support of our generous charitable partners.

That is why the C.W. Avery Family YMCA would like to thank the NASCAR Foundation for a $9,250 grant through its Speediatrics Grant Program which helped to support the promotion of healthy lifestyles for kids in summer camp this year.   

Camp activities included a three week step counter challenge, with campers receiving special pedometer watches from NASCAR to help track their progress each day. NASCAR also provided racing themed programming for campers featuring an activity booklet, healthy snacks and interactive videos.

C.W. Avery Family YMCA Youth and Family Director Shannon Stawikowski said the resources fit perfectly with the Y’s efforts to keep kids healthy and active.

“By engaging in fun games and activities during the day at camp, kids learned that physical activity is fun and exciting and that a healthy lifestyle can make them stronger, help them to have more energy, and feel their best,” Stawikowski said.  

Activities culminated in a Speediatrics Fun Day Festival that allowed kids to participate in fun outdoor games and challenges. Stawikowski said campers enjoyed the festival and that Speediatrics programming was an amazing addition to the Y’s summer day camp program in Plainfield.

“It kept the kids excited to come back to camp each day in anticipation of what we had planned for them next,” she said. “Everyone who helped plan the program went above and beyond to make it as easy as possible for YMCA staff to facilitate the step challenge and daily activities. We truly appreciate all of the work that went into providing this great program at our Y.”
