At the Y, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through our innovative swim program Safety Around Water, formerly known as Project SOAR, the Y partners with several local community agencies and schools to ensure that children in Joliet and the surrounding communities have the opportunity to learn to swim and enjoy recreation time at the Y. Since the program’s launch in 2008, the Y has provided more than 10,000 free swim lessons for area kids.
Currently, the Smith Family YMCA is currently seeking volunteers to help teach swim lessons for elementary school students at Fairmont School. The YMCA welcomes and appreciates anyone in high school or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity. Safety Around Water volunteers must enjoy swimming and be comfortable in the shallow end of the pool.
Swim lessons will be taught from 1:30-2 p.m. Monday-Friday at the Smith Family YMCA during the following weeks:
September 30-October 4
April 27-May 1
