The Morris Community YMCA was named Organization of the Year by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce & Industry at their annual dinner held March 22 at Chapin’s East in Minooka. Executive Director Missy Durkin accepted the award on behalf of the Y, a nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Several other businesses and individuals were also recognized for their successes and achievements over the past year.
Located in a humble space at 320 Wauponsee Street in downtown Morris, the YMCA currently serves more than 2,400 members throughout the Grundy County. Late in 2016, the Y announced the site of their future full-facility YMCA, a donated 12-acre parcel of land just west of White Oak Elementary School on DuPont Avenue.
A branch of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, the Morris YMCA brings families closer together, encourages good health, and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. Through its financial assistance and scholarship program, the YMCA works to fulfill its mission of ensuring that its programs are available to everyone and no one is turned away due to the inability to pay.
