YMCA camp offers many of the same benefits of a traditional camp, such as new experiences, skill building, a sense of community, and lasting friendships. However, the Y’s passionate summer day camp team makes Y camp second to none. Every day, this energetic summer camp crew works hard to give camp participants an unforgettable summer. And, behind every great team, is a great leader.
Fearlessly leading Galowich Family Y’s summer day camp team, you will find Youth and Family Director Stephen Franklin. Franklin started his Y journey a few years ago when he was referred to the Y by a friend who worked at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield. With a passion for helping children and being involved in his community, Franklin quickly applied to work part-time in the Y’s Before and After School Kid Zone program. In the summer, Franklin also worked as an instructor in the Y’s summer sports camp program.
With the start of camp just a few days away, Franklin and his summer day camp team are eager to welcome a new group of campers to the Galowich Y. Summer camp will get underway on Monday, June 10.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Franklin: I grew up on the South Side of Chicago near Midway Airport. During my junior year of high school, I moved to Romeoville. I attended Plainfield East High School and continued my education at Aurora University. I graduated from college in May of 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
Q: What are you passionate about in life?
Franklin: I am passionate about many things, but professionally, I am very passionate about the community. It’s a passion of mine to make sure that children have a place to go that is safe and feels like home.
A personal passion of mine is cars. I hope to one day build a twin-turbocharged Ford Mustang from the ground up.
Q: As the Galowich Family YMCA’s Youth and Family Director, what exciting plans do you have for summer day camp?
Franklin: I plan to create a safe and structured environment for our summer camp participants. I look forward to enhancing our summer day camp curriculum with new crafts, team building exercises and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) projects, and so much more.
Q: What makes Y camp great?
Franklin: Y camp is truly a great time for kids and it’s built with our community in mind. We understand that a lot of our local families have parents that work full-time, so Y camp provides parents with a safe place to bring their children during the summer. Parents can rest easy knowing that their children will get to have the best summer ever!
What’s your favorite summertime food and pastime?
Franklin: I love grilled hot dogs, burgers and brats! During the summer, I enjoy sitting back in the sun and watching a professional baseball game or sporting event.
