The YMCA has had a presence in the Joliet community for over 100 years. The first era occurred in 1882 through 1902, coming to an end due to financial problems. The second era began in 1928 with the establishment of a grand downtown Joliet YMCA facility. Today this organization has grown to five branches serving nearly 14,000 full privilege members located in Will, Grundy and parts of Kendall counties. For further details on the rich history of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, please see the download of our “Through the Years” 80th anniversary historical booklet.
Erma Agazzi Chuk was an extremely dedicated volunteer who served the YMCA for 68 years. She was the first woman to serve on and become an officer of the Metropolitan Board of Directors. Erma was a dedicated community member, involved in many other organizations. She promoted the YMCA with her time, many talents and personal historical treasures. In memory and appreciation of this amazing lady, our YMCA has created the Erma Agazzi Chuk History Center. The Center was dedicated in the fall of 2007 and is located in the Smith Family YMCA on Briggs Street. Erma left an estate gift which will provide ongoing funding for her beloved YMCA history. Please see the download titled “Legacy of a Lady” for further details on Erma Agazzi Chuk.
It is our wish that all visitors will be informed and inspired by the rich history of both our local and National YMCA. If you would like to visit the History Center, please contact Susan Lee, Director of Advancement at 815-729-9638X326 or slee@jolietymca.org to set up an appointment.
If you have YMCA memorabilia that you would be willing to share, we would love to hear from you. All donated items will be carefully protected and treasured within the Erma Agazzi Chuk History Center. Loaned items will be delicately reproduced and returned in a timely manner. If you can donate or lend material, please contact Susan Lee, Director of Advancement at 815-729-9638X326 or slee@jolietymca.org. Thank you!
We are always looking for volunteers to help in the History Center. This would involve laminating newspaper articles and filing information. Eventually we would like to establish visiting hours and volunteers would be essential to this opportunity. If you would like to become involved, please contact Susan Lee, Director of Advancement at 815-729-9638X326 or slee@jolietymca.org. Thank you!
